Case Study: The Value of Boundaries in Business

If so, you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs and highly successful people do. But I’d like to tell you that it’s not a requirement of success. It is possible to be just as successful as you are now, if not more so, by taking more time off. Find that hard to believe? I’d like to share a case study of one of my clients.

This client was already very successful in her comprehensive financial services practice (which included insurance and asset management) by the time we were introduced.

When we first began our work together, she said that she didn’t even care if she made any more money than she was already making. She was extremely satisfied with the success her business was experiencing but unhappy with the way her business had taken over her life. Every weekend was devoted to her practice, and she never took any time off. She wasn’t getting away for vacations or enjoying any of the fruits of her success. Her business was booming, but her personal life was suffering. In fact, her business was the only thing in her life getting enough attention.

I let her know that as an entrepreneur myself, this is an area I’ve personally mastered. It’s easy to lose balance as business picks up, and it can feel counterintuitive to take time away from the business after you put so much energy into building your business in the first place. From what I’ve seen, it’s very common for financial services professionals to have this experience as they are building and nurturing their business. I created a plan that included:

  • Clarifying exactly how much time she wanted to take off,
  • Re-establishing and honoring personal and business boundaries (including how to leave the office by 5:30pm),
  • Identifying everything she didn’t need to touch in order to delegate more effectively to her team,
  • Setting up the business and her calendar to support that ever-so-needed time off,
  • And eliminating limiting beliefs that were in the way of having the life she truly wanted.

Fortunately this client already had a team in place and was feeling ready for this change, so once the right structure for support was in place, she was able to make huge changes, and fast, especially around areas of her mindset that had been holding her back previously. She was so hungry to have balance that she quickly learned how well it worked to delegate effectively which gave her the opportunity to carve out the time she needed for herself. Once she was delegating more effectively, she could also keep her focus on rainmaking, meeting with clients, and other higher level activities. As she began to cultivate balance and establish boundaries between her personal life and business, her practice thrived as she began to experience even more referrals, new ideal clients, and consistent growth.

Best of all, I’m happy to say that within the first year of our work together she was leaving the office at 5:30pm, taking weekends off consistently, and even got away for a 2-week vacation! She was also able to carve out the time she wanted to include for the swimming and running that she loved. She was also able to spend more time with her children, and even started dating.
